Transitional Housing

One of the biggest barriers faced by Cherry Street guests who are ready to re-enter society is the inability to find clean, safe housing

Subsidized housing has long waiting lists, family and friends don't provide the supportive living environment our guests need, and purchasing a home is simply not an option.

There are also some guests who are ready to leave our shelters, but  aren't quite ready to re-enter society. They need a supportive environment in which they can rebuild their resources and continue to work on their goals.

Unfortunately, transitional housing is in short supply, a major factor in America's 56% homelessness recidivism rate.

That's why Cherry Street offers supportive transitional housing for men at Caleb House, and for women, at Abigail's House.  At each location, case managers and house managers provide guests with wrap-around services, including referral for available benefits, referral to classes at our Education and Career Center, case management, and other supportive services. Residents live communally, sharing chores, and sharing expenses according to their ability to pay.

Although we have no set time limits, our goal is to have transitional housing residents in permanent housing within 24 months of their arrival.

  •  Supporting guests in their efforts to live independently costs less than it would if they remain homeless and need our services ad infinitum.  It’s also less expensive than supporting them in prison.  If a homeless person commits a crime and goes to jail, it costs taxpayers $67 a day; Cherry Street can help for less than $11.
