Women's Shelter

Emergency Shelter
In February 1995, Cherry Street acquired a two-story brick building which began our long desired outreach for women, the Sparrow’s Nest. The Sparrow’s Nest provides safe emergency shelter for single women, with food, clothing, and hygiene items.

In September 2003, the Sparrow’s Nest temporarily suspended services in order to renovate and develop a more comprehensive shelter program to increase the quality of our services and increase the capacity from 36 beds to 52 beds. It reopened January 2005 and the facility renovation was completed in October 2005 and is now a fully operational facility for women with 52 beds.

Ready For Life Program for Women
The women’s program is available to all the women we serve through our emergency shelter program as well as community service referrals. This program offers a wide range of services to each participant for the purpose of spiritual, mental, and physical rehabilitation including:

  • Individual case management - one on one time with a case manager to help set life-changing goals and an individualized care plan
  • Celebrate Recovery/Reformers Unanimous - faith based 12-step programming
  • Community reconciliation
  • Bible study
  • Spiritual mentorship
  • Computer and job readiness training
  • Budgeting and financial management

Transitional Housing for Women
Once a woman has progressed through the Ready for Life program and dealt with circumstances in her life that brought her to Cherry Street, her next step to independence is finding affordable, safe housing. For a majority of our ladies, this is a barrier, therefore, they remain at the Sparrow's Nest, wanting to have more independence, wanting to move forward.

The solution is transitional housing. Unfortunately, Toledo is in short supply of this type of housing. However, through community partners and individuals, Cherry Street is beginning the process of setting up a house for the ladies who are ready for that next step.
